Who is eligible?

Once your child or grandchild obtains permanent residency or becomes a Canadian citizen, they can sponsor you for Super Visa. Note that if the parent or grandparent to be sponsored has a dependent child/ children, this visa doesn’t cover those dependents, and they might need to go through other programs. The family class sponsorship program is a good alternative for such a situation.

What are the process and requirements?

The process is straightforward once you get an invite from your child or grandchild, provided the child is a permanent resident or citizen of Canada. The invite will only be considered valid if it shows the inviter is related to the applicant. Also, an undertaking will be signed by the child/grandchild stating that they will take care of their parent/grandparents. If the document doesn’t show they are financially capable of taking care of their parents, it won’t suffice. The minimum necessary income requirement must be met to show they can support the applicant’s basic needs. In addition, before the super visa is issued, the applicant must apply for a temporary resident visa.

Some of the things the visa officer will validate before issuing the Super visa are the following:

A proof that the applicant is still connected to their home country

A proof of their current family and financial situation

The invitation sent by their child/grandchild

The purpose of their visit, clearly stated

The state of the applicant’s home country (Both political and economic conditions)

All these things are confirmed as the visa officers want to know if the applicant will exit Canada when their visa expires.

Super Visa and Temporary Resident Visa.

Many often question if they must apply for a temporary resident visa (TRV) before applying for a Super visa. Well, you will need to get a TRV if your country is not exempted from the TRV waiver. If you need the TRV from your country, you should apply for it, and then you can get access to your Super Visa. Both visas will ease the movement of the holder, and there won’t be a need for TRV reapplication once they travel into Canada again. Note that the Super visa comes with a fee that must be paid when the application is made.

If your country is exempted from applying for a TRV before the super visa is issued, you would still need to provide a document to access the country. This document is an official letter from the Canadian government and would be required anytime you need to come into Canada.
